Your Google Business Profile is probably the most important marketing asset you own. More people see it than your website. More people call you from it than from any other channel. And most businesses treat it like a form they filled out once and forgot about.
I have audited over 100 local business GBP listings in the last year. The same five mistakes show up in at least 80% of them. Every one of these mistakes is costing you visibility in Google Maps and local search results.
The good news: every one of them can be fixed this week.
Mistake #1: Using the Wrong Primary Category
Google lets you pick one primary category and up to nine additional categories for your business. The primary category is the single biggest factor in which searches your business shows up for.
The mistake I see constantly: businesses picking a broad category when a specific one exists. A wedding photographer listed as "Photographer" instead of "Wedding photographer." A cosmetic dentist listed as "Dentist" instead of "Cosmetic dentist." An HVAC company listed as "Contractor" instead of "HVAC contractor."
Google uses your primary category to decide which searches to show you in. If your primary category does not match the search, you are fighting an uphill battle no matter how many reviews you have.
The fix: Go to your GBP dashboard right now and check your primary category. Search for the most specific option that matches your core service. Google adds new categories regularly, so even if the right one did not exist when you set up your profile, it might exist now.
Mistake #2: Five Photos from 2022
Google tracks how many photos you have and how recently they were uploaded. Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than businesses with fewer than 10. That is not a typo. Five hundred and twenty percent.
But it is not just about quantity. Google's AI can now identify what is in your photos. Interior shots, exterior shots, team photos, product photos, and action shots all contribute to Google's understanding of your business.
The fix: Upload at least 20 photos this week. Include your storefront, your team, your work in progress, your finished projects, and your happy customers (with permission). Then add 2 to 3 new photos every week going forward. Set a recurring reminder on your phone.
Mistake #3: Never Posting Updates
Google Business Profile has a built-in posting feature that works like a mini social media feed. Most businesses have never used it. The ones that post weekly get measurably better visibility in local results.
GBP posts show up directly in your listing when people search for you. They also signal to Google that your business is active and engaged. A profile with weekly posts looks very different to Google's algorithm than one that has been dormant for two years.
The fix: Post once a week. It does not need to be complicated. A project you just finished. A seasonal tip. A promotion. A team spotlight. Each post should be 150 to 300 words with a photo and a call to action. That is 15 minutes of work per week for a meaningful ranking boost.
Mistake #4: Ignoring Reviews (or Only Responding to Bad Ones)
Responding to reviews is not just good customer service. It is a ranking signal. Google has confirmed that review responses factor into local search rankings. Businesses that respond to every review, positive and negative, rank higher than those that do not.
The bigger mistake: only responding when someone leaves a one-star review. That sends a signal that you only engage when forced to. It also means you are missing the chance to add keywords naturally in your responses.
The fix: Respond to every single review within 48 hours. For positive reviews, thank the customer by name and mention the specific service you provided. "Thanks Sarah! We are glad the AC installation went smoothly for you this summer." That response naturally includes "AC installation" as a keyword. For negative reviews, respond professionally, take the conversation offline, and show future customers that you handle problems with class.
Mistake #5: Missing or Wrong Information
This sounds basic, but I see it constantly: wrong phone numbers, outdated hours, missing service areas, no website link, or a website link that goes to a dead page. Every piece of incorrect information is a potential customer who gave up and called someone else.
The less obvious version of this: not filling out the services section. Google lets you list individual services with descriptions and price ranges. Most businesses leave this completely blank. That is free real estate for keywords and helpful information that Google uses to match you with searches.
The fix: Go through every field in your GBP dashboard. Update your hours (including holiday hours). Add every service you offer with a description and price range. Make sure your phone number is clickable and goes to the right place. Check your website URL. Add your service areas. Fill out the Q&A section with questions customers actually ask you.
The 30-Minute GBP Audit
Here is exactly what to do right now, in order:
- Check your primary category. Change it if a more specific option exists.
- Count your photos. If you have fewer than 20, upload more today.
- Write and publish one GBP post right now.
- Open your reviews tab. Respond to the five most recent reviews you have not responded to.
- Go through every information field. Update anything that is outdated or blank.
That is 30 minutes of work. Do it today. Then set a weekly reminder to post an update and respond to new reviews. These five fixes, consistently maintained, will move your local rankings more than almost anything else you can do.
